How to Submit a Manuscript

Before submitting a manuscript proposal to us, please look through our catalog to see whether your subject is in one of our areas of interest. You will notice that we do not publish unsolicited original fiction or any poetry, except for some Latin American and Middle Eastern literature in translation.

Preferred Contents of a Manuscript Proposal

You can download and fill out our Author and Manuscript Inquiry Form (in Microsoft Word or PDF format), or you can send us the materials below:

  • A cover letter describing the work. One or two pages is fine.
  • A table of contents, if you have one, so we can get an idea of what you cover.

If you don't have a table of contents, a more detailed cover letter or a general synopsis is acceptable.

  • A sample chapter or some sample pages, so we can evaluate your writing style.
  • A resume or curriculum vitae, so we have more information about your background.
  • If you wish your materials to be returned, please include a self-addressed stamped envelope large enough to hold them. Otherwise, your materials will be recycled.

Do not send irreplaceable materials. Keep a copy of your manuscript. If you must send illustrations, please send photocopies or make duplicates.

You may also send a simple query by e-mail to the assistant editor, Brian Contine, at bcontine@utpress.utexas.edu. However, due to problems with viruses, please do not send attached files. Please don't e-mail your manuscript.

What Happens Next?

Typically, you will receive either an initial expression of interest or a rejection within four to six weeks. If the editor requests your manuscript and finds that it meets his or her expectations, the next step is the review process when outside reviewers evaluate your manuscript. The review process takes from three to six months. If the reviewers recommend publication and the Faculty Advisory Committee approves the manuscript, then we will publish the book; once we receive the final manuscript, copyediting and production generally take a year to eighteen months.
