“ Anything we can do to help these students compete and become a part of a complete learning experience is a win for all of us who believe in the power of education to transform lives and build a better society.” Vice President for Student Affairs Juan González

Mooov-In Day marks the first of many great memories at the University of Texas at Austin—the sights and sounds of parents and students laden with clothes, electronics and other supplies that sustain new Longhorns during that important first year.

Students without parental support are often left out of this happy picture. Many lack the most basic items that transform a dorm room into a home away from home as well as into an important learning space. Horns Helping Horns is a great opportunity for alumni and friends to give to the neediest students an important leg up as they begin their college years.

Although a dormitory room comes equipped with basic furniture, it is up to the student to supply the items necessary for daily living and learning that support a successful transition into campus life.

Your monetary donations will be used to purchase basic items such as linens, study lamps, curtains and rugs, dishes, laundry supplies and other personal care items, and electronics such as TVs or radios. Eligible students will be contacted by the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and asked to select items they still need.We hope to generate enough funds to help insure the early success of these students and to create an endowment that will generate necessary funds for future students.

In addition to financial support, Horns Helping Horns will match these special students with mentors including Kim Heilbrun, wife of University of Texas at Austin President Bill Powers. Heilbrun originated the idea of Horns Helping Horns after learning about a similar program at the University of California, Berkeley.

If you are interested in becoming a mentor to one of these students, please contact Dr. Jennifer R. Hammat, assistant vice president for student affairs, at j.hammat@austin.utexas.edu or (512) 475-7450.

For additional information about contributing to Horns Helping Horns, please contact Andy de Waal, associate director for development, principal gifts, at adewaal@austin.utexas.edu or (512) 475-9683.
