Connecting to Wireless Network (restricted.utexas.edu) after WPA2 Upgrade
On Tuesday, August 5, 2008, WPA2 functionality was added to the restricted.utexas.edu wireless network on campus. WPA2 is a security protocol that can improve the stability and reliability of connections for wireless users, as well as offering stronger network security.
Most users won’t need to change anything to enable their computers or wireless devices to use the updated security protocol. However, if you are using the following configurations, you may need to take action:
- If your laptop is running Windows XP, you may have to re-run the installer for restricted.utexas.edu to use WPA2.
- If you use an older laptop or wireless device, you might not be able to use the WPA2 protocol; however, your device should still connect to restricted.utexas.edu through WPA.
- A few older devices will not be able to access the upgraded network at all; those users will need to complete an exception form to use guest.utexas.edu for the affected devices.
For more information, visit the ITS page about the WPA2 upgrade. Contact the ITS Help Desk if you have difficulty connecting to the wireless network.
