The ITS Help Desk is here to help you by phone, chat, e-mail or through our walk-in service. If your desktop or laptop has serious problems, we also provide a drop-off service.
For all services, you will need to provide your UT EID or a departmental account number.

E-mail the ITS Help Desk, providing a specific subject and a clear description of your problem or question. This will help us respond to your request more quickly. During peak times, such as the beginning of the academic year, you will typically receive a response within five working days.
Walk-in Service
Walk-In Service at the Help Desk is a no charge, first come first serve, one-on-one consultation with a Help Desk consultant. During this consultation, the Help Desk consultant will walk you through the resolution of many common problems, including:
- Backing up your data
- Clearing cookies and cache on your Web browser
- Installing Office 2003 or 2007
- Securing your computer
- Stopping spam
- Removing spyware
- Running an anti-virus scan
- Updating your operating system
The goal of this service is to raise awareness through coaching and documentation. You will perform the actions necessary to resolve the issue with support from a Help Desk expert, gaining a better understanding of how your computer works and making it easier for you to solve the problem if it happens again.
We often recommend that you come in if your computer is running slow or otherwise not performing well. You could have viruses, spyware, or other malicious code that slows your computer down and compromises your personal information. If your computer is infected with a virus or some other malicious code, the industry best practice is to reformat the hard drive and install a clean version of the operating system. Our Walk-In Service has documentation to help you through this process, or you can use our drop-off service if you prefer to have us do it for a fee.
Please note that as of August 1, 2007, we no longer have the facilities to look at your desktop (tower or other computer without a monitor) at our walk-up service. Customers with these computers can receive documentation and coaching, but they will be referred to our drop-off service for any work to be performed.
Computer Drop-off Service
The Computer Drop-Off Service is for those who would prefer to have someone else fix their computers. Turnaround time is typically three business days. During peak times, such as the beginning of the academic year, turnaround time may be longer.
