Surveys and Assessment
Definition
Assessment is a systematic, organic, and ongoing process of collecting, analyzing, and using information to improve the delivery of advising services. Wherever possible, assessment should measure student-learning outcomes and advising delivery.
Purposes
The three main reasons for assessment are to
- Demonstrate effectiveness to our stakeholders in an effort to justify our compensation and verify accountability;
- Analyze Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) to guide advising practices; and
- Identify strengths and weaknesses in order to improve our services individually and collectively.
Values
Academic advising in the College of Liberal Arts reflects the University’s values and its commitment to student learning and success. Advisors
- Work as part of a larger team to execute the College’s and University’s missions;
- Promote the value of a liberal arts education, especially the importance of critical thinking;
- Treat students with dignity, empathy, and respect when responding to their needs and challenges;
- Facilitate students’ self-empowerment by helping them develop realistic goals as well as skills in decision making and life management;
- Are accessible and responsive to students;
- Refer students to appropriate programs, resources, and services;
- Seek a holistic view of each student by considering their unique development as well as their social and academic needs;
- Work to minimize institutional barriers through advocacy and interpersonal relationships while taking into account the University’s overall needs and concerns;
- Share responsibility for maintaining the integrity of the degree plan with other university officials and especially with students; and
- Apply fair and consistent standards in cooperation with other university officials when acting as proxy for the Dean.
Advising Goal
The primary goal of academic advising in the College of Liberal Arts is the design of a program that is
- Intentional;
- Coherent;
- Based on theories and knowledge of teaching, learning, and human development;
- Reflective of developmental and demographic profiles of the student population; and
- Responsive to the special needs of individuals.
Programmatic Outcomes
To achieve our primary goal, the Liberal Arts advising program
- Promotes learning and development in students based on relevant theories and knowledge;
- Assures that advisors communicate effectively and honestly with students in a caring and open manner;
- Provides current and accurate information on University and College policies, procedures, guidelines, and degree requirements;
- Protects academic integrity through fair and consistent application of University and College policies, procedures, and guidelines;
- Facilitates graduation in four years;
- Provides an advisor training program.
