Undergraduate Program Advising Office

History Undergraduate Advising is:

  • the place to go to explore history as a new major
  • for degree-planning for existing majors
  • to discuss post-graduation plans
  • as well as to find out about history courses and faculty.

History undergraduate advisors are usually available on a walk-in basis, so feel free to come by any time during our office hours: Monday–Friday, 9–11:45 a.m., 1–4 p.m.

Academic Advisors

Academic Advising Coordinator Nancy Sutherland

Nancy A. Sutherland

Nancy A. Sutherland, History Academic Advisor since 1995 
Over 25 years experience working with college students in three large state universities. Came to The University of Texas in 1987 as an academic advisor in MEC. Served seven years as the senior advisor in the College of Fine Arts Dean's Office and was the first full time, non-faculty advisor in the Department of History beginning in 1995.

Two time recipient of the James W. Vick Texas Excellence Award for Academic Advising nominated by students in Fine Arts and History. Earned Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas A&M University in Education, Curriculum, and Instruction and Lifetime Texas Teaching Certification in History.

Academic Advisor Tom Griffith

Tom Griffith

Thomas H. Griffith, History Academic Advisor since 2004     
Griffith joined the College of Liberal Arts as an academic advisor in 2000 and became a History Academic Advisor in 2004. Advising all majors from orientation through graduation.

Worked with Student Academic Records in the university Registrar's Office from 1996-2000. Earned Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Houston with majors in Russian Studies and Journalism.

Susan C. Somers

Susan C. Somers

Susan C. Somers, History Academic Advisor since 2010
Came to the University of Texas in 2005 to pursue graduate work in European History, where her research interests included 17th- and 18th-century French history, with a focus on economics and gender. Served as a teaching assistant within the history department for two years.

Earned Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Philosophy from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. and Master of Arts degree in History from The University of Texas at Austin.
