Course Description
The Crusades were religious wars waged during the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries against non-Catholic Christians, Muslims, Jews, and Mongols. Almost all of the reading for the class will consist of primary sources written by participants of the crusades. Most of these sources were written by crusaders, but some come from the various "enemies" of the crusaders. Class discussion will cover not just the crusades themselves, but the reasons why Europeans felt it necessary to attack people of other religions and cultures.
