Intellectual Entrepreneurship Receives National Award for Serving Latinos

Interdisciplinary consortium earns $5,000 for excellence in education

AUSTIN, Texas -Aug. 20, 2008- The Intellectual Entrepreneurship Pre-Graduate School Internship Program (IE), part of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, earned a 2008 Example of Excellence at the Graduate Level award from the national education nonprofit organization, ¡Excelencia! In Education.

The award promotes higher-education programs that contribute to academic success for Latino students.

The largest number of participants in the program are liberal arts students. Approximately 50 undergraduate liberal arts students were enrolled during the 2007-08 academic year. During the spring 2008 semester, about 32 percent of IE Pre-Graduate interns were Latinos and 8 percent African Americans, more than twice the percentage these groups comprise of the university's student population.

The IE Pre-Graduate School Internship connects undergraduates with faculty and graduate students in their academic fields to explore graduate education. Its mission is to educate citizen scholars, students who creatively use their knowledge to fulfill their professional goals and ethical commitments.

IE will receive the award and a $5,000 prize at the Celebración de Excelencia and the Examples of Excelencia workshop Sept. 23-24 at the Hilton Americas Hotel in Houston. IE's record of achievement will be spotlighted in the event program and in the next edition of "What Works for Latino Students in Higher Education," a compendium summarizing the year's nominations.
