Introduction to Petitions and Overrides

Use the Override Template for *NRDEGR changes that are already established as routine for your department and degree plan or that fit the common overrides, below.  If you are unsure if the *NRDEGR change that you need is already an established practice, use the Petition for Degree Modification form or contact Academic Affairs.

If you are requesting a course substitution or other change to the stated degree or major requirements, you must submit a Petition for Degree Modification with all relevant documentation.  Petitions not accompanied by supporting material (syllabus, etc.) are subject to being returned for further information. Petitions originating in a department other than that of the course to be evaluated should go through the relevant department for departmental recommendation.

Common Overrides:

• Duplicating topics courses where the topics vary and can be repeated.
• Duplicating courses where one course has a passing grade but is being excluded for the one with a grade of 'F' or 'CR'.
• Apply a course in one area requirement instead of another. Example: Move PHL course from Area C to Area D.
• Apply a course to the minor instead of the major.
• Use an upper-division foreign language course (that has a prerequisite of fourth semester proficiency) toward the foreign language requirement. The course must be language-based in order to fulfill this requirement.
• 36 hour limit in one subject: raise to 39 hours in any Liberal Arts subject.
• For foreign language majors: raise total number of hours allowed if the combined number of hours required for the introductory foreign language coursework and the number of hours required for the major justify it.
• Increasing total hours and/or hours in a single subject for a dual-degree student.
